Rainy Days at Ocean Lakes: What to Do When the Weather Turns
Myrtle Beach in summer averages 5 to 7 rain days per month. If you’re staying a full week at Ocean Lakes, the odds are decent you’ll hit at least one afternoon or day where the weather turns. Here’s what to actually do with a rainy day at the campground, based on what my guests report back after they’ve had one.
First: is it a passing squall or an all-day rain?
The forecast tells you more than the sky does. Coastal Carolina afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August and often pass in 30 to 90 minutes. If you check the radar and see a fast-moving band, the smart move is often to wait it out on the porch or in the pool (light rain doesn’t close the pool unless there’s thunder and lightning).
If the forecast shows all-day rain (usually associated with a broader weather system, tropical storm, or hurricane fringe), that’s when the full rainy-day playbook activates.

Sandy Harbor Family Fun Center
The Sandy Harbor Game Center arcade is fully indoor and rain-proof. Currently the indoor pool is under construction and is set to re-open in May of 2027. Once the indoor pool is available, it will stay open in rain conditions (thunder and lightning trigger a mandatory closure of the outdoor pools and water park, but indoor pool has different rules, check on-site).
Recreation Building
Located centrally at Ocean Lakes, the Recreation Building has ping pong tables, seasonal fitness classes, and hosts weather-triggered activities during rainy periods. Kids’ craft activities often move here on rainy days.
Camptown Center
Sandy Mart (grocery + gear), Sandy’s Meet n’ Eat café, Coffee & Creamery, and the Center Stage venue are all indoor. If you want to walk out of the house without getting soaked, cart over to Camptown Center for coffee, ice cream, or lunch.
Your rental house
This is what a lot of families forget. A full week at the beach with young kids is exhausting. A rainy day can often be one of the best days of the trip because it forces the whole family to slow down. Think: coffee (or cocktails) on the porch listening to rain, board games, long movies with popcorn from Sandy Mart, and lots of time for conversations. A lot of my repeat guests will tell you a rainy day is the one they remember most from the week.
Rainy day options within 15 minutes of Ocean Lakes
If the weather is all-day rain and cabin fever is real, drive out. Best indoor options within 15 minutes:
Ripley’s Aquarium (about 10-12 minutes north)
Indoor aquarium with a walking tunnel through a shark tank, penguin exhibit, touch tanks. 2 to 3 hours of activity. Perfect all-ages rainy-day pick.
WonderWorks (Broadway at the Beach, about 15 minutes north)
Indoor “amusement park for the mind” with 100+ exhibits: virtual reality, physics experiments, upside-down house exterior. Best for kids 6-14.
Medieval Times Myrtle Beach (about 15 minutes north)
Two-hour indoor dinner theater with jousting, sword fights, and a full four-course meal. Better for evenings than midday, but works for a rainy dinner plan.
Movie theater
Multiple theaters along US-17 within 15 minutes. Check current showtimes.
Broadway at the Beach
Outdoor shopping and entertainment complex with mostly covered walkways between shops, restaurants, and indoor attractions. Works even in moderate rain.
Rainy day options for teens and adults
Not everyone wants an indoor amusement park.

– Movie theater
– Barefoot Landing (about 30 minutes north) for shopping + waterfront restaurants
– Prestwick Golf clubhouse for a quiet lunch with a bar view even if you can’t play
What to pack for potential rain days
Rain-day items worth adding to standard Ocean Lakes packing:
– One deck of cards or a compact board game
– A downloaded movie or two on a laptop or tablet
– Rain jackets (kids’ and adults’), even one thin windbreaker each
– A book or two if you actually read on vacation
– A backup indoor activity that doesn’t need Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi can drop in serious storms)

What about thunder and lightning?
Standard Ocean Lakes protocol: outdoor pools and Sandy Harbor Water Park close for the duration of the storm plus 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning. Golf carts are still fine to drive in light rain but avoid open-air cart rides during active lightning. The beach is not the place to be during a storm.
Hurricane season considerations
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with September being the statistical peak (per NOAA’s National Hurricane Center). Serious storm threats (Cat 1 or higher tracked toward the Grand Strand) are usually forecast 4 to 7 days out.

What if we booked shoulder season and the water park is already closed?
For September through May visits, when the water park is closed regardless of weather, the rainy day playbook is essentially the same except the “indoor pool” option is your primary Sandy Harbor-adjacent activity. The Game Center, Recreation Building, and Camptown Center all stay operational year-round.

Yes. Thunder or lightning triggers mandatory closure for the storm plus 30 minutes after. Light rain often doesn’t close the water park.
Is the indoor pool at Sandy Harbor always open?
From September 2026 – May 2027 it will be under construction. They are buildings a brand-new indoor pool experience. Once it open fully again is does have extended hours compared to outdoor pools. Off-season hours reduce.

Can I still use my golf cart in the rain?
Yes, in light rain. Slow down, turn on headlights if the cart has them. Avoid during active lightning.
Do I get a refund if it rains all week?
Standard rental policy applies. Weather isn’t grounds for a refund unless there’s an official evacuation order.
What if a hurricane is forecast during our stay?

Is Broadway at the Beach worth the drive in rain?
Yes, for teens and adults. Most walkways are covered, restaurants are indoor, and the movie theater is on-site.
Can I take the kids to the beach in light rain?
You can. Ocean water temperature doesn’t change with rain, and light rain on the beach is a specific vibe some kids love.
