Ocean Lakes Family Campground spans 310 acres in Myrtle Beach, SC, with nearly a mile of oceanfront. With that much ground to cover, where your house sits inside the campground matters almost as much as which house you book! Oceanfront sections (2000, I, H, HH, K) put you closest to the water but have a higher price point and typically sell out the fastest. Quieter inland sections (3000, 4000) are less expensive and farther from the action. This guide walks through how the site numbering works, what to expect in each zone, and how to match a section to the trip you’re planning.
Section assignment matters more than people realize when they’re picking an Ocean Lakes rental. After years of helping guests choose, I’ve learned that the right answer depends entirely on what you’re optimizing for.
How is Ocean Lakes laid out?
The campground is organized into numbered and lettered sections, with the layout running roughly from the oceanfront on the east side to the inland lakes and quieter areas on the west. The [official Ocean Lakes campground map](https://www.oceanlakes.com/about-us/maps/) is the best reference for exact locations, but the high-level layout looks like this:
– Oceanfront sections (2000, I, H, HH, K) sit closest to the beach and Atlantic.
– Mid-park sections (various 1000s, 5000s, and mixed letter sections) sit closest to Sandy Harbor Family Fun Center, the water park, and Camptown Center.
– Lakeside sections wrap around Magnolia Lake and the dog park, quieter and often more affordable, with access to the lakes.
– Inland sections (3000, 4000) are the quietest, less traveled, and typically the best value!
Most of our Dune Life properties fall in the mid-park and lakeside zones, with a handful closer to the beach. The specific section is listed on every property page on our booking site (https://booking.duneliferentals.com/all-listings).
What does each section actually feel like?
Oceanfront sections (2000, I, H, HH, K)
You hear the ocean from the porch. You walk to the beach without needing a cart. You pay the most for the privilege and you book 6 to 12 months out, especially for July and holiday weeks. These sections also see the most foot traffic during peak summer because every other guest in the campground is heading toward the same stretch of beach. Oceanfront is the right call if the beach is the entire reason for the trip, your group does sunrise walks, and budget isn’t the main constraint.
Mid-park sections (closer to Sandy Harbor)
This is where the bulk of the activity sits. Sandy Harbor Family Fun Center, the water park, mini golf, the arcade, and Camptown Center are all in the middle of the campground (per [oceanlakes.com](https://www.oceanlakes.com/amenities/)). If you’re traveling with kids 4 to 14 and the water park is the main draw, a mid-park house is closer to the action than an oceanfront house. The beach is a short golf cart ride away. Mid-park works best if kids and the water park are the priority, you want the best balance of beach access and amenity proximity, and you’re willing to give up oceanfront views for the trade.
Lakeside sections
Quieter than mid-park, less crowded than oceanfront. These houses sit closer to the inland lakes, the Lakeside Paws N’ Play dog park, the Nature Center, and walking trails. They work well for adults or older guests who want a calmer trip. The trade is a slightly longer cart ride to the beach or water park. Choose lakeside if noise level matters, you’re traveling with a dog, or you want to spend more time in nature than in the splash zone.
Inland sections (3000, 4000)
The quietest part of the campground and often the best value for the week. Farther from the beach (10 to 15 minute walk, 3 to 5 minute cart ride). Less foot traffic, less noise, and lower prices per night. Inland makes sense if you’re prioritizing budget, your group includes light sleepers, or you don’t mind the cart commute.
Are the section letters and numbers connected?
Not in a simple way. Ocean Lakes has hundreds of sites organized by section letters (I, H, HH, K, MH, P, Q, M, X, etc.) and section numbers (2000s, 3000s, 4000s, etc.) that don’t follow a single naming scheme. The section labels are part of Ocean Lakes’ internal map system that has developed over decades.
The shortest way to understand where a specific site sits: look it up on the [official Ocean Lakes campground map](https://www.oceanlakes.com/about-us/maps/), which is available as a printed map at the Main Office, at Ocean Lakes Golf Cars, and at Ocean Lakes Properties, or digitally on the official site.
What do “MH” site numbers mean?
The “MH” prefix on some site numbers (Site MH155-B, Site MH-513) indicates a Mobile Home unit rather than a stick-built beach house. These are fully furnished vacation rentals with the same amenities (full kitchen, multiple bedrooms, AC, Wi-Fi, golf cart). They’re built on a manufactured-home frame, tend to be more affordable per night, and are often located in slightly more inland sections.
How does location affect price?
The pricing pattern at Ocean Lakes is consistent and predictable:
– Oceanfront sections carry the highest price per night and book farthest out
– Mid-park sections sit in the mid-range with faster turnover of available dates
– Lakeside sections range from mid-to-lower pricing depending on house quality
– Inland sections offer the lowest price per night with more last-minute availability
Off-season (November through April), the pricing compression flattens out and even oceanfront homes drop significantly. Ocean Lakes also operates a monthly escalating discount program for extended stays ($2 to $5 per day discounts depending on month, per [Ocean Lakes’ discounts page](https://www.oceanlakes.com/rates/discounts/)).
Which section should I book for a first Ocean Lakes trip?
If it’s your first time and your main goal is the campground experience itself (water park, beach, amenities, the kids running wild), a mid-park section is usually the sweet spot. You’re close enough to walk or cart to anything, you get the family-resort vibe, and you save 20 to 35 percent compared to oceanfront.
If it’s your first time and the beach is non-negotiable, book oceanfront and book early.
If it’s your first time and budget is the priority, lakeside or inland is the right call.
Frequently asked questions
Which Ocean Lakes sections are oceanfront?
Sections 2000, I, H, HH, and K are the oceanfront sections (per [Ocean Lakes campsite info](https://www.oceanlakes.com/lodging-2/campsites-2/)).
Which Ocean Lakes sections are quietest?
Sections 3000 and 4000 are the quieter, less traveled areas of the campground (per [Ocean Lakes campsite info](https://www.oceanlakes.com/lodging-2/campsites-2/)).
What’s the closest section to the Sandy Harbor Water Park?
The mid-park sections are closest to Sandy Harbor Family Fun Center, where the water park, mini golf, arcade, and pools are located. The exact closest section depends on which house you’re booking, so check the campground map.
How far is the beach from inland sections?
Most inland sections are a 3 to 5 minute golf cart ride from the beach. Walking takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on starting point and the specific beach access you use.
Are some sections better for older guests?
Lakeside and inland sections tend to be quieter, with less foot traffic and fewer late-night noise issues. If you have grandparents in the group who go to bed early, these sections are usually a better fit than oceanfront in peak summer.
Are all sections equally accessible?
Ocean Lakes has accessibility features documented on the [handicap access page on their official site](https://www.oceanlakes.com/amenities/handicap-access/). Individual rental homes vary, so confirm specifics with the host before booking.
Where can I see the official Ocean Lakes campground map?
The current map is available online via the [Ocean Lakes Maps page](https://www.oceanlakes.com/about-us/maps/), as a printed oversize map at the Main Office and at Ocean Lakes Properties, and as smaller folded maps throughout the campground.
